Lurgan College is renowned locally, nationally and internationally for its sporting prowess and success.

  • The girls’ 1st XI hockey team: Ulster and All Ireland Champions four times since 2003
  • The 1st XV rugby team: recent winners of the Senior Ulster Schools’ Trophy
  • The Medallion XV rugby team: recent winners of the Junior Ulster Schools’ Trophy
  • The girls’ 2nd XI hockey team: recent winners of the Ulster Schools’ 2nd XI Cup
  • The Ski Team: Ulster USSA Ski Champions almost every year in recent history
  • The girls’ 2nd XI hockey team: recent winners of the Ulster Schools’ 2nd XI Cup
  • Cricket, hockey, rugby: provincial and international representative honours

 



The College’s sporting aims are:

  • to promote in each pupil a love of, interest in and knowledge of physical activity and its contribution to the maintenance of life-long personal health and fitness
  • to prepare pupils to make active, creative and purposeful use of their leisure time throughout their lives Playing
  • to contribute to the physical development of each pupil through the promotion of skills acquisition
  • to contribute to the social education of individual pupils by offering them opportunities to cooperate with one another and to share the value of sports and games through a sense of satisfaction and achievement of play


 

The sports available to pupils are:

  • Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Cross-Country, Dance, Fishing, Fitness, Football, Golf, Hockey (Girls), Hockey (Boys), Netball, Rugby, Skiing, Softball, Spinning (cycling), Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Tug of War, Volleyball, Weight Training

Facilities:

  • Facilities for Physical Education include a well equipped gymnasium, a new FIH approved hockey Astroturf pitch, three rugby pitches, one all weather multi-purpose pitch which converts into a 200m running track in the summer, two netball courts and three tennis courts. Use is also made of the Craigavon Borough Council facilities close to the school, namely Craigavon Leisure Centre, the Golf/Ski Centre and the swimming pool complex in the town. The school also avails of the cricket facilities at Waringstown CC


College sports teams are regularly involved in significant overseas tours: rugby (e.g. Canada, Spain, Italy), hockey (e.g. Spain) and skiing (e.g. Austria).
