OBE for former Headmaster!
Lurgan College is delighted that our former Headmaster, Mr Trevor Robinson, has been awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours List for services to Education.
Mr Robinson began his teaching career in Grosvenor Grammar School in 1986, where he later became Head of French and Spanish. He then transferred to Banbridge Academy as Head of Modern Languages, before becoming Senior Teacher and in 2000 being promoted to the post of Vice-Principal.
In 2005, Mr Robinson was appointed as the eighth Headmaster of Lurgan College. Over the course of the next seventeen years under his leadership, the reputation of the school continued to grow and became synonymous with providing academic excellence underpinned by strong pastoral care and support for every pupil. In accordance with the school motto ‘Meliora Sequor’, he always sought to ‘follow better things’ which saw the school regularly ranked amongst the best in the province both inside and outside of the classroom.
Mr Robinson's passion for education was, however, not confined to Lurgan alone. He also undertook a variety of other roles during his tenure across the wider educational spectrum. He was a Director of the Controlled Schools Support Council, President of the Association of School and College Leaders NI, as well as Chairman of the Association of Controlled Grammar Schools.
The Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr Stanley Abraham, reflects that this award recognises how Mr Robinson displayed ‘selfless determination and commitment to significantly address and improve the educational experience of hundreds of young people in the town of Lurgan and the surrounding area. His vision, which he pursued with relentless creativity and passion has resulted in making a massive difference in the lives of so many young people, setting them on pathways which led our pupils to become responsible, respectful and principled members of society, not only in Lurgan but also throughout the nations. During his time of office, Mr Robinson dedicated himself to the lives and futures of the young people who had found an eternal place in the heart of a truly sincere and faithful professional.’
Upon his appointment back in 2005, Mr Robinson remarked that the position of Headmaster filled him with a ‘feeling of pride, great anticipation and a high degree of awe.’ The Lurgan College family today feel that same pride, indeed awe, at a job remarkably well done that has been recognised in such a wonderful way.
